#1 Adjustable Stride of up to 32 Inches
With a regular elliptical, you’re locked into a fixed stride length. But with the FS5i you can set your own stride – you can even get strides of up to 32 inches long!
This opens up a world of possibilities as the machine adjusts to your natural stride – and not the other way around.
So you can use it as a stepper with short up-and-down strides, an elliptical with a jogging natural stride and upper body arms pumping – or even a treadmill with running/sprinting extra long strides.
This means you get more variety and an overall better workout. You’ll also burn more calories since your lower body muscles are always being challenged and not adapting.
It also makes it a more ergonomically correct workout as it adjusts to your body’s natural stride, which means less strain on your hips, knees and joints.
#2 Ultra Low Impact

Dual Color Console
Unlike the FS7i or FS9i models which have multi color consoles, the FS5i only has a dual color console.
So you do lose a bit in terms of graphics. It’s simpler than the other models – and the console window is slightly smaller as well.
No Incline/Decline
The FS5i model does not come with incline that you find on the FS7i or FS9i models (or decline that you get on the FS9i model).
Some people like incline as it helps them to crosstrain different lower body muscle groups – however it’s not necessary for an effective workout.
Bottom Line?
If you’re don’t need all the fancy bells and whistles – but love the advantages of the Freestride Trainer – you may want to consider the Nordictrack FS5i model.
It gives you the main benefits of the Freestrider: the ability to vary your stride and get a variety of different crosstraining motions.
